1.5 billion smart phones sold in 2017, and they are getting smarter than humans by the day!
Smart phones are getting smarter by the day. And it will dominate the lifestyle of man to a point of no return.
Market researcher Gartner has revealed that 1.5 billion smart phones were sold globally last year, up 2.7% from the 1.4 billion units sold in 2016.
“Sales of smart phones are not expected to slow down in any way yearly. As the smart phones get smarter, more users will upgrade to ‘upgrade’ their lifestyle,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.
“However smart the phones are, users, especially parents, need to restrict the use of the hand phones by children. As it is, we are already getting less and less interactive.
“At the dining table, many are just playing with their hand phones. When the food is served, it’s the hand phones that get to ‘taste’ it first.
“In short, we are not only getting less and less interactive with our family members, relatives or friends when gathered, we are behaving less human,” he added.
Is Distracted Walking on the Job a Hazard? The term distracted driving has become much-discussed as of late, but distracted walking is another common phenomenon. From crossing intersections to pushing shopping carts in crowded parking lots, you can see pedestrians focused more on their smartphones in potentially dangerous situations than their surroundings. There are near-misses with passing cars, twisted ankles on potholes and collisions with objects or other distracted walkers. Injuries from walking while using a cell phone more than doubled over a five-year period, while the total number of pedestrian injuries dropped during the same time period.1 Researchers believe the actual numbers might be higher than reported, especially if patients are reluctant to share the true cause of their injuries. It has become such a problem that for the first time, the National Safety Council included cell phone distracted walking as a cause of unintentional deaths and injuries in its 2015 Injury Facts Report.2 … for more, go to https://www.travelers.com/resources/workplace-safety/is-distracted-walking-on-the-job-a-hazard |
Syed Razak, who is Gerakan’s nominee to contest N.37 Bukit Lanjan in the coming 14th General Election (GE14), said the impact of handphones and other electronic gadgets were proving to be more negative than positive.
“Do we want our children to grow up less caring of us? Do we want them to grow up with hand phones that way?” he asked.
Syed Razak said even adults must also start disciplining themselves on the use of smart phones, especially those who disregard the danger to their lives when using hand phones.
“Not only the health hazards, using hand phones when driving or crossing a busy road,” he added.

Over 1.3 billion Android devices were sold last year, followed by 215 million iOS devices. — Bloomberg
In the battle between Android and iOS, the former emerged victorious as the preferred operating system in 2017.
According to market researcher Gartner, over 1.5 billion smartphones were sold last year, with 1.3 billion of them being Android devices. It was followed by 215 million iOS devices and 1.5 million smartphones using other operating systems such as Windows Phone and Blackberry.
Leading the Android pack is Samsung that sold 321 million units last year, an increase from the 306 million in 2016. Apple trailed with 214 million units, showing a slight drop from the 216 units sold in the previous year. Chinese brands followed suit with Huawei selling 150 million units, Oppo with 112 million units and Vivo with 99 million devices sold.
Gartner believes that the overall success of Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ contributed to the South Korean tech giant's market share last year, and expects the launches of its next flagship devices to boost Samsung's smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2018.
As for Apple, iPhone sales fell 5% in the fourth quarter of 2017, compared to the same quarter in 2016.
"Apple was in a different position this quarter than it was 12 months before," said Gartner research director Anshul Gupta. "It had three new smartphones – the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X – yet its performance in the quarter was overshadowed by two factors. First, the later availability of the iPhone X led to slow upgrades to iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, as users waited to try the more expensive model.
"Second, component shortages and manufacturing capacity constraints preceded a long delivery cycle for the iPhone X, which returned to normal by early December 2017. We expect good demand for the iPhone X to likely bring a delayed sales boost for Apple in the first quarter of 2018," he added.
Overall, in 2017 as a whole, smartphone sales to end users increased 2.7% from the 1.4 billion units sold in 2016."
