Global automobile sifu Ghosn says robot taxis to be a common daily life feature by 2024
Renault chief executive Carlos Ghosn has boldly predicted that robot taxis will be a common feature of daily life by 2024.
That is only about six years away.
“Ghosn is the Brazilian-Lebanese-French motoring sifu responsible for the successful Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi tie up in Japan. He certainly knows what he is talking about,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.
“The global motoring technology transformation is no more just about electric vehicles (EVs). The world will witness a global transformation to fully autonomous or driverless EVs,” he added.
Syed Razak, reiterated in this blog, that Malaysians involved in the motoring industry and related businesses must be prepared for the global chnages.
“Many businesses may become obsolete, like car workshops and car accessory shops, if they do not start planning and prepare for the transformation.
“There is no choice. Businessmen must innovate and ensure that their products and services are up to date to ensure they remain competitive and relevant,” he added.

LAS VEGAS -- A conference room in the SLS Las Vegas Hotel was an understated follow-up to Renault-Nissan's flashy keynote at CES last year, but Chairman Carlos Ghosn found a way to hold court amid an array of journalists and coterie of executives through repeated, enthusiastic endorsements of the alliance's autonomous car strategy. Ghosn was there ostensibly to announce the launch of a venture capital arm aimed at wooing startups, with a target investment of $1 billion seeded over five years. In effect, this highlighted the fact that the alliance, now including Mitsubishi, was lagging peers in acquiring or partnering with startups and tech companies. "There's a lot of statements, a lot of declarations; there's often a lot of delays," Ghosn said. "The only way to measure how advanced we are is to measure how many troops you have on the ground. Today, Nissan is the largest maker of autonomous drive [systems]. About 75,000 cars with autonomous drive features, mainly in Japan … for more, go to http://www.autonews.com/article/20180110/MOBILITY/180119975/ghosn-nissan-renault-mitsubishi-autonomous

Syed Razak, who is Gerakan’s nominee to contest N.37 Bukit Lanjan in the coming 14th General Election (GE14), said all businessmen, not only those in the car and related industries, “must start thinking out of the box to strategise their operations”.
He also urged the federal government to help businessmen to plan their operations more effectively by revealing clear policy details on new and disruptive technologies.
“They can then make more informed decisions for investments. Let not Malaysian businessmen and Malaysia be caught with their pants downs when the transformation peaks,” he added.

Robotic taxis are to become a common feature of everyday life by the year 2024 – at least, if you are to believe Renault chief executive Carlos Ghosn.
This gradual shift will involve a range of different levels of autonomy in cars, from intelligent assistance systems to completely driverless vehicles – "and we will experience all this in the next few years," said Ghosn at the recent CES trade show in Las Vegas.
However, he noted, a legal framework for this type of technology would be needed first.
The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance led by Ghosn plans to invest US$1bil (RM3.94bil) in start-ups over the next five years. Their first partner will be Ionic Materials, a US company that develops materials for solid-material batteries without cobalt.
In the first year of the plan, a total investment of US$200mil (RM786.92mil) is expected, said Ghosn in Las Vegas. The group’s broader plan will be to create a platform through which startup companies can enter into business with all three manufacturers at the same time. — dpa"
