If Kedahan can earn RM15,000 a month from agri-waste, why not you?
A Bernama news story carried by on-line news portal Free Malaysia Today titled “Kedahan earns RM15,000 monthly from agri-based waste” captured my attention and imagination.
That is because the contents of the story is in line with this blogger’s thoughts and visions for Malaysia, particularly Bukit Lanjan folks, as blog posted earlier (read these for context: http://bukitlanjan.blogspot.my/2016/12/bukit-lanjan-better-way-to-promote.html and http://bukitlanjan.blogspot.my/2016/12/bukit-lanjan-free-rail-transport-for.html).
“Like I stressed in my previous blog postings, petty and personal political bickering should take a back seat for Malaysians and Malaysia to progress.
“Instead, we must all try to come up with creative and innovative ideas and proposals on how to contribute to nation-building and thus forward Malaysia as a progressive and prosperous nation,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.
He said national unity or neigbourhood unity in the context of Bukit Lanjan “is naturally the foundation for a progressive Malaysia”.
“With solid united communities as the foundation for Malaysia, we can all thus focus all our energy on coming up with creative and innovative programmes and projects to help drive Malaysia progressively,” he added.
Syed Razak, who is Gerakan’s nominee to contest N.27 Bukit Lanjan in the coming 14th General Election (GE14), said the Kedahan’s success is proof of how state and federal governments can help improvise and promote nation-building programmes and projects.
“Instead of just relying on BR1M handouts that does not bring about any tangible sustainable returns to nation-building, governments can provide financial help or loans to people like the Kedahan architect.
“Anyone can start a business based on the Kedahan’s concept. The disabled can also be employed and the products can also be exported. All one needs is a solid business module or planning to make an effort work,” he added.
Syed Razak said: “I am sure there are many in Bukit Lanjan who fall in the category of hardcore poor and poor, or unemployed. Why not go into such ventures.
“Start small, grow your business slowly but steadily. Contribute to nation-building in Bukit Lanjan and your future.”
Here are the details of what the Kedahan succeeded:

Former architect makes decorative items and souvenirs using agricultural waste and plans to expand his business overseas due to rising demand.
SERDANG: A former architect, Abdul Rahman Sani, is earning a lucrative income of up to RM15,000 a month making decorative items and souvenirs using agricultural waste.
He runs the recycled and go green-based business with his wife, Nik Rusnah, 55, who is an arts teacher.
Kedahan Abdul Rahman, 56, said he used agricultural waste like padi stalks, kenaf plants, coconut shells and pineapple crowns to make products like paper, wall decorations, decorative lamps, key chains, tissue boxes and fridge magnets.
He said the price of the products, under the brand name ‘Armensa Design’, ranged between RM5 to RM5,000.
“Our clients include government agencies that use the products as office decorations or to give away as souvenirs,” he added.
He was met by Bernama at the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism (MAHA) Exhibition here.
In view of the encouraging response for his products, Abdul Rahman said he and his wife planned to expand their business overseas.
Abdul Rahman said he ventured into the agro-based business in 2000 with most of the waste products obtained from industry players in Kedah.
He said his business was a success also due to support and assistance from various quarters, including the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry, Muda Agricultural Development Authority in Kedah, Kedah Malaysian Handicraft Development Board and the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board."
