Malaysia needs to learn a thing or two about managing SWFs from Norway

Sovereign wealth funds are massive investment vehicles with trillions of dollars in assets. However, these wealth giants are little known and less understood than other types of investments vehicles. They usually are worth more than this. Michael Dalder/Reuters - BUSINESS INSIDER Malaysia needs to learn a thing or two about managing SWFs from Norway In January 2014, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund (SWF) ballooned so much due to high oil and gas prices that every Norwegian became a theoretical millionaire. Today, despite the depressing global oil prices, Norway’s SWF has grown even stronger - earning a record US$63 billion (RM265 billion) from investments in the first half of this year. “As reported in 2014, the Nordic nation is proving to be an exception as others struggle under a mountain of debts. It still holds true now,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said. Norway’s SWF was set up in 1990 and by 2014 it owned about 1% of the world’s stocks, as well a...

Hasn’t Malaysia’s federal debt breached the RM1 trillion mark? The national news agency  Bernama ’s news posted by online news portal  Free Malaysia Today  was given the headline “3.6 million credit card holders in Malaysia as of June”. That’s not the correct news angle or focus for the report. “It is the outstanding debt of RM36.9 billion owed by credit card holders that is most worrying,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said. “This means a significant percentage of Malaysians aged between 20 and 74 are buying goods and services on credit. If they are able to settle their debts promptly every month, then it is not an issue or of any domestic and national concern. “But we do know that there are many who are struggling or do not settle their credit card bills. That's why we also have tens of thousands of credit card debtors made bankrupts,” he added. Such debts, Syed Razak said, must be monitored to ensure that they do not go out of control a...
